I was looking forward to this book, after hearing a review of it on NPR. However, thus far it has been a disappointment. I enjoy true crime accounts, but the problem here is that the author keeps inserting herself into the narrative. I am not interested in her coming of age stories or her maternal woes. She seems to feel that she is providing valuable insights, when to me she comes off as self-centered. Also, she appears totally clueless about the way we lived fifty years ago.To be fair, I am not even half way through the book, and hopefully it will become more compelling later on. What I expected and what I read were far apart. I knew and worked with Paula, I had read the well researched background tracing Paula’s disappearance and death over a decade ago.This book is a fascinating read and a social commentary of the late 60’s and early 70’s in middle America woven together by the personal insights of the author, Katherine Dykstra. As a man who was “raised” in the early 70’s by feminists that showed me the challenges women faced and learned to modify my “Midwestern” male upbringing. I appreciated the narrative and the deeply personal sharing of Ms. Dykstra, as a woman, mother, wife, and journalist as she wove the intriguing story around, not only Paula, but knowingly or unknowingly threatened women in society in general. A deep wade into class, race and gender prejudice, not only here but applicable globally. I believe this book would benefit people, from early pubescents to mature adults, male and female.We can’t change the dialogue until we are aware a dialogue needs to take place. The passage of 50 years hasn’t really altered “all” as much as was hoped in my young adult life, the time I knew Paula. The book will take you on a journey, not anticipated, but worthy and confronts the continuing arguments over the last 60 years.Whether, on the left, middle or right politically, morally or economically, Ms. Dykstra makes you think.A must read today, regarding the past, and the future of humans and the interactions between the male and female of our species.I highly recommend this book, share it, talk about it, live it.“What Happened to Paula” helps us all remember not just her (which is very important), but all women that “disappear” forever from their friends and family.
